Transitional Year Residency

Application Information

Applicants to the Transitional Residency Program should apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Paper applications will not be accepted. Applicants are requested to include the following:

• Evidence of successfully passing USMLE Step 1 & 2

• Three letters of recommendation

• Dean's letter

• Personal statement

• Medical school transcripts

Interview Information

Interviews are by invitation only; applicants selected to interview will be notified via email. We extend invitations to interview beginning in late September thru mid-January of the current application year. 

If you are selected to interview with us, you will have a virtual interview via Microsoft Teams with the Transitional Program Director, Associate Program Director and our residency coordinator; applicants should be prepared to have a strong internet connection as well as access to audio/visual equipment for the interview.

We are thrilled that you are interested in one of our residency programs. Our Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Transitional Year programs are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) who oversees the accreditation of residency and fellowship programs in the US. Each application cycle, our programs utilize the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to place applicants into our residency programs. Before entering or continuing your candidacy in the selection process with any THMEP residency program, applicants must ensure they will meet the institutional eligibility requirements (employment, state licensure, policies etc.) for any residency position in which you have applied.

Residents rotate on a variety of specialties throughout the year and each resident's schedule will vary depending on the specialties they select. To view a sample schedule and learn more information about each rotation, view the attached sample schedule and rotation information.

Residency Salary Stipend 2024-2025

• PGY 1 - $64,061

Residency Salary Stipend 2025-2026

• PGY 1 - $65,983

Additional Annual Residency Stipends

• Benefit Stipend $3,800 – to offset the employee contribution to health insurance.

• Education Stipend $1,500 – reimbursed expenses that include step 3 and other approved educational resources. 

• Meal Allowance – residents receive a meal allowance based on their schedule and training year. Funds are loaded onto ID badges to be used at Tucson Medical Center.

Residency Benefits

• All THMEP residents receive four weeks paid time off per year.

• All TMC Health Medical Education residents are employees of Tucson Medical Center. To explore the most up-to-date offering please visit the TMC Benefits page.

• Professional Liability Insurance: while performing duties that are normally included in the training program. (Includes "tail coverage”).

• Paid orientation prior to the start of residency, including BLS/ACLS certification.

• Transitional Residency year starts June 24th and ends June 23rd of the following year. This allows all residents to have the last week of June off - not counting against vacation time - in order to move to advanced programs.

Tucson Medical Center (TMC)

Tucson Medical Center has been Southern Arizona's locally governed nonprofit regional hospital for 75 years. TMC traces its roots to the world-famous tuberculosis center, the Desert Sanatorium, which opened in 1927. The sanatorium's owners donated the facility to the people of Tucson during World War II, and TMC was established as a community, nonprofit hospital in 1943.

TMC's buildings and grounds spread over 120 acres. Most patient rooms are private with a view, either a sun-drenched patio or a vista of mountains and distant horizons. TMC is licensed for more than 600 adult, pediatric and hospice beds. The hospital serves more than 30,000 inpatients and 122,000 outpatients yearly and has several emphasis areas, including maternal and child health, cardiac care, hospice care, neuroscience, orthopedics, diagnostic services and senior services. TMC also created the region's first emergency department dedicated specifically for kids.

The hospital's more than 600 physicians represent 60 specialties, from anesthesiology to vascular surgery. Most of these physicians are board-certified. The physicians work closely with nursing, residents and other hospital staff to ensure that every TMC patient receives quality care.

Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS)

Southern Arizona VA Health Care System provides all Veterans with outstanding health care, trains America’s future health care providers, and conducts important medical research. The Tucson VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital that provides a full range of health services for Veterans with state-of-the-art technology. SAVAHCS has been servings Veterans since its dedication on October 13, 1928, and they meet the health care needs of more than 170,000 Veterans in 8 Arizona counties and 1 county in New Mexico. SAVAHCS employs around 3,000 health care professionals and support staff and every year, they treat more than 8,700 Veterans as inpatients, perform more than 5,000 surgeries, and complete nearly 700,000 outpatient visits
