Resident Wellness

In alignment with ACGME Common Program Requirements, our institution is committed to fostering a culture that prioritizes the well-being of residents, fellows, and faculty. We recognize that physician wellness is essential to providing high-quality patient care and maintaining a positive learning environment.
Our wellness program promotes meaningful clinical work, manageable workloads, psychological and physical safety, and access to confidential mental health resources. We support trainees through policies that encourage appropriate time away from work for personal health, family needs, parental leave, and other life events without fear of negative consequences.
Through ongoing assessment, feedback, and continuous improvement, we strive to create a respectful, supportive, and resilient training environment where learners can thrive both professionally and personally. Our institutional wellness efforts also include clear coverage plans, support systems during times of need, and initiatives designed to reduce burnout and enhance engagement, purpose, and joy in medicine.

Resident Wellness & Community

At THMEP, resident wellness is more than a priority, it is an essential part of our culture. Throughout the academic year, we host bi-monthly wellness events that bring together residents, faculty, and families from all THMEP programs, as well as our partner institutions, including El Rio Health and Marana Health. These events provide opportunities to recharge, build meaningful relationships, and celebrate the community that supports our residents both inside and outside the hospital.
At THMEP, we believe strong physicians are supported by strong communities. Our wellness events are designed to foster connection, resilience, and a sense of belonging that extends far beyond residency training.

Annual Paint Night

One of our most popular traditions is Paint Night. Residents gather for an evening of creativity, dinner, and laughter while trying something many have never done before. Hosted by our program coordinators, this event offers a relaxed environment to unwind, connect with colleagues, and create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Each October, residents embrace the Halloween spirit during our annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Teams compete to design the most creative pumpkin for a chance to win the coveted champion's mug. With pizza, treats, and plenty of friendly competition, this event has become a resident favorite.

Holiday Celebration

As the calendar year comes to a close, we welcome residents, faculty, and their families to our holiday celebration. This festive gathering provides an opportunity to connect outside of the clinical environment, meet the family members who support our residents, create holiday ornaments, and enjoy great food and seasonal treats together.

Sabino Canyon Hike

When Tucson's winter weather invites us outdoors, residents and their families gather for a scenic hike in Sabino Canyon. This family-friendly event encourages wellness, connection, and a chance to enjoy the natural beauty that makes Southern Arizona such a special place to live and train.

Community Runs

THMEP residents have access to a variety of community wellness opportunities through Tucson Medical Center's sponsorship of local running and walking events. Employees may be eligible for complimentary or discounted registration for select races throughout the year, promoting physical activity, stress reduction, and connection with the Tucson community. Participation opportunities range from 5K events to trail races, half marathons, and family-friendly walks hosted by organizations such as Southern Arizona Roadrunners and Everyone Runs

End-of-Year Picninc

We close each academic year with a community picnic celebrating the friendships, accomplishments, and milestones of our residents. Whether welcoming incoming trainees or honoring graduates preparing for fellowship or independent practice, the picnic is a time to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate another successful year together.
